Academic Curriculum Developer, Office of Education, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

Reporting primarily to the Director of Administration, the Academic/Curriculum Developer will be responsible for  providing leadership in completing the the Preclinical Networked Medical Education Pilot Program within Rural and Regional Health,

Project Management Activities include:

  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Rural and Regional Health, Course (Block) Coordinators in FoMD, the Associate Dean Pre-clerkship Medical Education and Office of Education staff  (and University of Calgary counterparts) prepare and deliver needs assessments and gap analysis to determine the best remote communities to deliver the Pilot Project in and which blocks (courses) to use for the Project
  • -Lead the design and development of educational frameworks, recommend appropriate instructional design models for Pilot Project and determine appropriate strategies for the implementation of instructional delivery methods
  • -Provide the best evidence from an instructional perspective, in collaboration with the education/scientific committees, to ensure that the process for curriculum delivery is well informed
  • -Collaborate with the Office of Education, the eLearning team and members of the University of Alberta and Calgary faculties on recommendations for appropriate technologies and tools for eLearning and communication
  • -Communicate regularly with all partners associated with the Pilot Project to determine the requirements for delivering education to learners
  • -Prepare and deliver within the specified timelines, budget, and resources available orientation workshops for participants and faculty, provide learning support to participants during program implementation 
  • -Coordination of the design and development of the PME Pilot Project Development of a plan for the evaluation of the PME Pilot Project including ethics approval (where appropriate)
  • -Coordination of the delivery of the PME Pilot Project (this includes site visits to the location)
  • -Complete revisions to PME Pilot Project delivery as needed (mid-course minor modification may be necessary) of program as needed (based on formative feedback during the PME Pilot Project) including Project learner feedback and summary PME Pilot Project evaluation 
  • -Provide written evaluation of the PME Pilot Project including recommendations for future Preclinical Networked Medical Education, including but not limited to necessary revisions to PME Pilot as needed

 Educational Framework Activities include:

  • -Lead the development of educational frameworks, recommend appropriate instructional design models for the medical education programs in the Office of Education, and determine appropriate strategies for the implementation of instructional delivery methods
  • -Collaborate with the Director of Educational Support, and the Director of Administration, Office of Education, faculty and technical experts to create a system-wide eLearning development and delivery model and process to ensure that best practice is being followed and that eLearning within the Faculty incorporates leading edge educational technology (when applicable) 
  • -Provide the best evidence from an instructional perspective, in collaboration with the education/scientific committees, to ensure that the process for eLearning for medical education is well informed

 eLearning Technologies Activities include:

  • -Keep apprised of new educational technologies, specifically those that are applicable in medical education
  • -Develop standards and best practice guidelines for  the implementation of   and online (blended) learning programs
  • -Collaborate with the eLearning team on recommendations for appropriate technologies and tools for learning and communication, based on the most recent research and best practices
  • -Contribute  to the process for uploading content into a Course Management System or Virtual Community of Practice software (e.g., Homer)
  • -Consult with the Director of Education Support on the development of curricular blocks/courses to enable distribution through the medical/dental education network/program.  Communicate regularly with all partners, including the Community Program designer who will determine the requirements for hosting students in rural settings

 Education Workshops and Interprofessional Collaboration activities include:

  • -Prepare for and deliver orientation workshops for participants and program facilitators in Pilot sites and within the Faculty (where appropriate)
  • -Provide guidance to participants (faculty and learners) during Pilot Project implementation 
  • -Ensure that the projects are completed within the specified timelines, budget, and resources available
  • -Work to resolve any negative interpersonal conflicts: Build positive working relationships with colleagues, partners, and clients

 Education Research Support activities include:

  • -Design, develop & implement research projects(where applicable)
  • -Contribute to the development of appropriate documents for ethics approval (where applicable)
  • -Contribute and/or complete the  analysis of data and write reports
  • -Disseminate information and evaluation results 
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Describe the minimum level of education, experience and skills required for the position

    A PhD or Master’s degree in Medical Education, Distance Learning, Adult Education, Instructional Design, or Academic Development, or equivalent education and management of an academic team. Experience in the following areas required:

    • -A significant amount of related experience in designing and coordinating instructional programs for face to face and for distance learners in the field of health education or higher education
    • -A significant amount of related experience in leading and working on cross-functional teams
    • -Experience in designing and delivering faculty professional development related to educational technology and curriculum development 
    • -Developed conflict resolution and mediation skills will be an asset and ability to work tactfully with government, healthcare, and faculty representatives.
    • -Demonstrated skills of incorporating the use of innovative pedagogy and instructional technologies for teaching: teaching/training experience with adult learners.
    • -Expertise in data collection and needs assessment data gathering methods; along with the ability to identify relationships and draw conclusions required.
    • -Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint), the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, course management systems, web-conferencing software, online discussion forums, online survey tools; familiarity with project management software; experience designing e-newsletters.
    • -Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, presentation, leadership and management skills. Evidence of ability to effectively work on a project team with employees at all levels.
    • -Experience with writing preparing procedural manuals, learner manuals and other documentation for administration and learners 
    • -The incumbent will be required to work independently and be expected to provide leadership in ID/AD related development and implementation matters.  -These undertakings, however, need to be informed by regular communications and consultations with faculty and supervisors with regard to needs and requirements for instructional design in medical/dental education.
    • -The incumbent will have regular interaction with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s faculty and personnel
    • -All matters involving database security, copyright, and finance require approval from the incumbent’s supervisors. Normally, instructions will be verbally provided.

    • The Academic/Curriculum Developer will have:

    • -Expertise in the area of eLearning in advanced education and curriculum design; medical education experience is desirable
    • -Expertise in educational technology, with the ability to assess a variety of educational technologies and evaluate their capacity to meet the needs of learners and faculty
    • -Expert knowledge of recognized design and development methods for blended and online learning
    • -Ability to use best-practices and current approaches for effective implementation and evaluation of learning technologies
    • -Knowledge of educational theories as they apply to advanced education
    • -Ability to create and lead workshops for faculty, staff, and/or learners on the effective use of learning technology for blended and online learning
    • -Strong communication oral and written communication skills
